Born in Moscow, Russia, Ivan Pranishnikoff was known for his richly colored depictions in oil and watercolor of Russian military subjects, as well as scenes of the American frontier. In 1870, he arrived in America and began work as an illustrator. Working for Harpers Weekly, he toured Texas and the Indian territories painting for the magazine.
