This terracotta Gandharan figure represents the Buddha in Mahaparinirvana, depicting the moment of his passing into final nirvana. The Buddha is shown reclining on his right side, his head supported by his hand, the expression serene and introspective, embodying spiritual transcendence rather than mortal death. The drapery falls in rhythmic, deeply carved folds characteristic of Gandharan sculpture, reflecting the region's synthesis of Hellenistic naturalism and Buddhist iconography. The composition conveys both solemnity and quiet grace, capturing the profound doctrinal significance of the Buddha's release from the cycle of rebirth.
