The present work captures an afternoon with the famed Brookside Harriers, featuring hunt master Mr. Harrison Carr on his grey hunter, Harlequin, and surrounded by several favorite hounds. Pierpont, the kennel huntsman, stands at right in a tall hat, and the figure of Dr. Hooker, Rector of Rottingdean, accompanied by his groom, appears in the distance.
Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000.
Condition Report*:
Lined canvas. Mild frame abrasion at edges. Stretcher bar marks visible at left and right edges under raking light. Yellowing to the varnish layer. Craquelure throughout, most pronounced in the sky area and with a few instances of associated lifting. A few scattered small losses, apparently stabilized beneath the varnish layer. Some scattered small dots of discolored accretion and visible retouching. Not examined out of frame.
Under UV: varnish fluoresces green. A very few finely applied dots and dashes of retouching in the sky and to the background just below the central rider's proper right hand.
