ART & DESIGN SPEAKER SERIES // PURE COUTURE: A LESSON IN FASHION HISTORY AND HIGH DESIGN

Annette Becker

Annette Becker is the Director of the Texas Fashion Collection at the University of North Texas. In that role, she researches, preserves, and presents the collection's nearly 20,000 garments and accessories spanning 250 years of fashion history. Becker holds an MA in Art History from UNT and has professional experience in museums around the country. She has published essays on numerous subjects, including: the body as it relates to nineteenth-century fashionable and reform dress, the designer Mollie Parnis's relationships with American First Ladies, and lace and American cultural matronage. Exhibitions curated by Becker include "Reimagining the Kimono" and "West Dressed: Fashions Inspired by the American West" at NorthPark Center, "Sportswear to Athleisure: The Creation of Comfortable Clothing" at UNT ArtSpace, "White House Style" at UNT Art Galleries, and "On Bodies" at The Goss-Michael Foundation.

In her presentation, Ms. Becker will define the term "couture" as it relates to the world of high fashion. She will explore the history of haute couture, delve into twentieth-century changes in the world of French high fashion, and detail how to determine whether a garment is couture.
