This is the fourth time Heritage has set the world record at auction for RETNA, having broken its own record three times. The result nearly doubled the previous RETNA world record, which was set whenSerenity of the mind States Moments of dark days allows Soaring like a search light -High-, 2012, brought sold at Heritage Auctions in March 2019 for $93,750.
"We are thrilled to continue to solidify and consolidate our position as the market leaders in the Urban, Street and Graffiti Art, having set record prices for RETNA, Banksy, Hebru Brantley and others in this event," Heritage Auctions Vice President of Modern & Contemporary Art Leon Benrimon said. "We are continuing to see incredible bidding activity and unlike many other market segments, we are starved for good quality material to fulfill demand. This signature auction nearly doubled its presale low estimate, but it bears noting that we are seeing similar results throughout this segment."
Banksy also was enormously popular among collectors, with two of his works topping the previous record for his artwork at Heritage Auctions. His Pulp Fiction, 2003 also soared to lofty heights when 44 bids drove its final price to $150,000 – six times its high pre-auction estimate and nearly twice the previous record for the image of $87,680 that was set in September. The screenprint on paper captures the characters played by John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson in the 1994 classic film. The artist's Golf Sale, 2003, a signed and numbered screenprint on wove paper that is editioned No. 89 of 750, finished at $90,625, more than seven times its high pre-auction estimate and nearly doubling its previous record of $51,013, which also was set in September. Prior to Wednesday's event, the previous Heritage record for Banksy was set in July 2019, when his Rude Copper, 2002 fetched $62,500.
Two works by Hebru Brantley broke the record for his works at Heritage Auctions: Blue FlyBoy from The Watch, 2013 set the record when it brought $38,750, and Green FlyGirl from The Watch, 2013 finished at $37,500.
Other top lots included, but were not limited to:
· KAWS Lost Time, Alone Again, and Far Far Down (set of 3), 2018: $45,000
· Mr. Untitled, 2008: $40,000
· RETNA These Are the Days, 2011: $30,000
· Richard A. Hambleton Horse and Rider (Grey Wash), 2003: $27,500
· KAWS You Should Know I Know, 2015: $27,500
The auction was something of a springboard into a new series of Urban Art auctions Heritage Auctions is launching in response to collectors' desire for artwork by specific artists.
"Our monthly Urban Art sales have grown tremendously," Benrimon said, "and as a result, starting next year we are starting a new auction series called In Focus to help satisfy demands for individual artists, starting with an all Banksy auction in January 2021."
