PROPERTY FROM A TEXAS COLLECTIONCLAUDE LALANNE
"Trône de Pauline" A Gilt Bronze Chair, Paris, France, 2000
Marks: CL, 6/8, LALANNE, 2000
79 x 42 x 31 inches (200.7 x 106.7 x 78.7 cm)
LITERATURE:
Cf. F. Lalanne, Les Lalanne: Exposition, Centre National d'Art Contemporain, Paris 1975, p. 69 (for a related model);
R. Rosenblum, Les Lalanne, Geneva, 1991, p. 81;
D. Marchesseau, Les Lalanne, Paris, 1998, p. 128.
The fanciful and inspired work of the Lalannes consistently defies placement within the strict confines of a single movement in the history of 20th century design. Their works often reinterpret how we see the functional utilitarian object when it is transformed surrealistically, and very often by juxtaposition, into something extraordinary. In the present work Claude Lalanne tempers the delicacy of foliage with the monumental weight and scale of bronze. The result is not static but imbued with tension and the force of potential energy. The work draws upon earlier explorations utilizing ginkgo leaves and the delicate reeded quality of her furniture for Colonial Williamsburg. The present composition is at once Baroque with equal doses of Art Nouveau and the grotto woven masterfully by the artist into a utilitarian sculptural fantasy.
Condition Report*:
Overall in excellent condition. There are a few scattered areas, especially on the inside of the leaf which is wrapped around the proper right side of the chair , where the surface is showing typical oxidation, overall in very good condition. Impressive size, great example.
