After Domenico Fetti
Laborers in the Vineyards
Oil on panel
14-5/8 x 18 inches (37.1 x 45.7 cm)
PROVENANCE:
Nicholas M. Acquavella Galleries, New York (according to a gallery label fragment on the frame).
The subject of this painting is one of the parables from the New Testament that tells the story of how a laborer who accepts the invitation to work in the vineyard, no matter how late in the day, will receive an equal reward with those who have been faithful the longest (Matthew 20: 1-16). This is often interpreted to mean that even those who are converted late in life earn equal rewards along with those who converted early. Domenico Fetti found the parables a great source of inspiration and depicted many of them during his career. They were also very popular; there are ten known replicas of this subject; the painting now in the collection of the Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden is considered the prime work.
Estimate: $800 - $1,000.
