Photographer William Wegman graduated from both the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, and the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, with a BFA and MFA in painting respectively. After teaching at various universities, Wegman's interests in areas beyond painting ultimately led him to photography. Wegman is famous for his compositions involving his Weimaraner dogs in various costumes and poses. Wegman's most prominent photographs were made on a large format Polaroid camera, the method implemented in
Under Chiffon,
unlike his more recent works which are shot in digital format.
While living in Long Beach, California, Wegman acquired Man Ray, his first Weimaraner which signaled the start of his now famous oeuvre. In 1972, Wegman and Man Ray moved to New York and in 1986, a new dog, Fay Ray, came into Wegman's life, and soon thereafter a new series of portraits emerged, marked by Wegman's use of the Polaroid 20 x 24 camera. Fay Ray is the subject of
Under Chiffon.
Wegman's artwork has been exhibited in museums and galleries internationally, including a traveling retrospective of his work that included an exihibition at the renowned Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
