IMPOSING SHIP MODEL OF THE HISTORIC FRIGATE 'VIRGINIA'
American Marine and Ship Model Gallery, Salem MA
'Virginia' was launched in Maryland in 1776 in service of the Continental Navy. She served for less than two years before being captured by the British in 1778. This model by John M. Bobbitt, showing her close to completion in 1776, is exquisitely built and features exposed hull ribs using cherry and boxwood.

SHIP MODEL DIORAMA 'LAUNCH OF THE USS MONITOR'
American Marine and Ship Model Gallery, Salem MA
Hitchcock's meticulously detailed diorama commemorates the launch on January 30, 1862 in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, of the United States Navy's first ironclad warship of the Civil War. She is most famous for her participation in the Battle of Hampton Roads less than six weeks later on March 9. It was the first between two ironclads, pitched against the CSS Virginia.
