REUVEN RUBIN (Israeli 1893-1974)
Jerusalem
Oil on canvas
21.25in. x 29in.
Signed lower right: Rika/ Rubin
Texas Frame Corporation label on verso
Provenance: From the artist's home in Israel to present owner
Although Reuven Rubin was born in Rumania and studied art in Paris, his art is distinctly Israeli. He studied briefly at the Bezalel School of Art in Jerusalem, and he made his exhibition debut in Jerusalem in 1922. In 1924, he had his first solo show and in 1932, he had another one-man show as part of the opening of the Tel Aviv Art Museum. He designed scenery for Habimah, the National Theater of Israel. Rubin created a Jewish style of art. Influenced heavily by the work of Henri Rousseau, Rubin fused the French style with Jewish nuances. Among Rubin's most memorable works are his paintings of the Yishuv, particularly landscape scenes that depict the Israeli worker. Biblical themes also occur frequently in his paintings. His work was extremely popular in Israel and he was the first Israeli artist to achieve international acclaim. Rubin served as Israel's first ambassador to Rumania from 1948-1950. His autobiography, My Life -- My Art, was published in 1969, and in 1973 he received the Israel Prize for his artistic achievements. Rubin signed his first name in Hebrew and his surname in Roman letters.

Oil on canvas
13-1/2 x 14-1/4 inches (34.3 x 36.2 cm)
Partial inscription,
A Fe
at lower left on the panel showing a white cloth under the basket
Provenance:
Newhouse Galleries, as Jan-Baptiste Bosschaert (New York);
Mr. and Mrs. F. Howard Walsh (Fort Worth, Texas);
Walsh Family Art Trust
These companion paintings by an unidentified hand draw upon still life developments in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain and Italy, from the first three decades of the seventeenth century, at a time when still life painting was emerging as a specialty genre, and baskets were commonly depicted as containers for fruit and flowers. The broad handling and the treatment of the cloth with gilt thread suggests a Spanish origin for the pictures. The works probably date no later than about 1630, after which time still life arrangements in this genre generally became more complex.
A remnant of a signature and/or inscription is located on the far left side of the white tablecloth, on the portion which falls over the edge. The inscription seems to read "
A Fe...
" possibly a shortened form of
Anno Fecit,
a common Latin phrase for "
year in which I made this
" used by seventeenth-century painters. The name and the date are not discernible.
