REUVEN RUBIN (Israeli 1893-1974)
Jerusalem
Oil on canvas
21.25in. x 29in.
Signed lower right: Rika/ Rubin
Texas Frame Corporation label on verso
Provenance: From the artist's home in Israel to present owner
Although Reuven Rubin was born in Rumania and studied art in Paris, his art is distinctly Israeli. He studied briefly at the Bezalel School of Art in Jerusalem, and he made his exhibition debut in Jerusalem in 1922. In 1924, he had his first solo show and in 1932, he had another one-man show as part of the opening of the Tel Aviv Art Museum. He designed scenery for Habimah, the National Theater of Israel. Rubin created a Jewish style of art. Influenced heavily by the work of Henri Rousseau, Rubin fused the French style with Jewish nuances. Among Rubin's most memorable works are his paintings of the Yishuv, particularly landscape scenes that depict the Israeli worker. Biblical themes also occur frequently in his paintings. His work was extremely popular in Israel and he was the first Israeli artist to achieve international acclaim. Rubin served as Israel's first ambassador to Rumania from 1948-1950. His autobiography, My Life -- My Art, was published in 1969, and in 1973 he received the Israel Prize for his artistic achievements. Rubin signed his first name in Hebrew and his surname in Roman letters.

George Lawrence Bulleid was born in Glastonbury, England, the son of a solicitor. He began his career following in his father's profession but later attended the West London School of Art and subsequently studied at Heatherley's. By 1889 Bulleid was elected an associate of the Royal Watercolour Society, and often signed his works with the initials ARWS after his name. He was an active member of the society and exhibited over a 100 works there. Bulleid moved to Bath in 1890, and he spent the rest of his life there painting Greco-Roman scenes and floral pictures. Bulleid's celebrated paintings were of classical themes consisting of two or three figures -- images imbued with graceful tranquility and painted in the spirit of Alma-Tadema. Bulleid was close friends with Godward and Ryland.
