Georges Rouault was born the son of a cabinetmaker and his earliest education was from his grandfather, a man who possessed a strong knowledge of and appreciation for art. During grammar school, Rouault displayed skill in drawing and his art teacher encouraged his talents. As a young man, he apprenticed to a stained glass artisan and there he learned to restore medieval stained glass windows. This experience later influenced his painting style and his choice of subject matter -- religion.
Rouault began evening classes at the Ecole National des Arts and later studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He befriended artist Gustave Moreau, who took young Rouault under his wing and encouraged him. Around 1900 Rouault radically changed his painting style and began working out new techniques and concepts. He exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1903 along with Matisse and other artists. Rouault was inspired by the theme of sin and salvation, and focused on religious subjects, prostitutes, judges, and tribunals. In 1916 Rouault illustrated a number of books and for some time focused entirely on printmaking. From this period came numerous etchings and aquatints entitled Miserere. He resumed painting in 1927. Rouault also made ceramics and created designs for theater sets, tapestries, and stained glass windows. His artwork is housed in important museums, including The Hermitage, St. Petersburg; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Cl

Lavender Fields
Oil on canvas
22.5in. x 36.5in.
Signed and dated lower right: Didier-Pouget
Framed in reproduction frame
William Didier-Pouget began his formal art training at the École des Beaux-Arts in his native town Toulouse, France. He later studied at the Academy of Paris under French landscape painter Baudit and made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1866. Didier-Pouget focused on the countryside of southern France and infused his landscapes with light and color. During his career, his favorite subjects were beautiful fields of heather in the fog, forests filled with trees, plateaus in the Creuse Valley, and the Dordogne River. Didier-Pouget exhibited at various venues and upon winning the gold medal at the Universal Exposition 1913, he was selected as a member of the Jury as well as a permanent senior member of the Société des Artistes Francais. His paintings are housed in the Petit Palace, Paris; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and public collections in Toulouse, and Lyon, France.
