Rene Lalique and the Pine Tree; A Special Relationship
Rene Lalique (1860-1945) spent much of his long and prolific life in the shadow of pine trees. Though many other westerners take them for granted, Lalique elevated common pine to the highest level of his
oeuvre,
inspiring jewelry, metal, glass and even architectural elements for several decades. The primary source of inspiration may well have been the
allee
of majestic pines approaching Lalique's first country house in Clairfontaine, near Rambouillet, a short drive from Paris. He took time to photograph, sketch and collect the branches and cones as specimens, finding extraordinary beauty in their seasonal transformation. Lalique's highest tribute to the pine still adorns the magnificent glass doors and
beton Coignet
façade of his atelier at 40 Cours la Reine, installed early in 1903 and an essential stop in Paris for all Lalique admirers ever since. We can only imagine the delight and pride Lalique took in this exquisite vase in 1920.
Cire perdue
glassmaking requires a technical and artistic virtuosity only Rene Lalique possessed, and documentary evidence proves Rene Lalique played a significant role in making these precious and unique creations himself. Few Lalique vases are as personal or academically important to the art of Rene Lalique as this one.
