Edward Hopper Goes to the Dogs at Heritage!
Dallas, Texas: Heritage Galleries and Auctioneers (HGA) will offer a charcoal on paper sketch entitled "Dog with Black Collar," by noted American realist Edward Hopper in their upcoming Fine Arts auction, to be held May 11, 2005, in their Dallas, Texas headquarters.
"Edward Hopper was the best-known American realist of the early 20th century," said Lucas Rigby, Consignment Director for HGA, "and this piece, 'Dog with Black Collar,', is a wonderful example of this artist's work."
"Hopper was born in Nyack, New York in 1882, and developed a love for art at a very early age," Rigby continued. "Trained at the New York School of Illustrating and the New York School of Art, where he studied under William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri, it was not until his second solo show, in New York in 1924, that he achieved any notoriety."
"Once fame came, however, it came quickly," Rigby continued. "After the 1924 show, Hopper became well-known for his sparse, realistic paintings that explored themes of separation and isolation. His works hearken back to an earlier day, and are imbued with a sense of emotional nostalgia for bygone times. Hopper's best known painting, Nighthawks (1942), once a staple as a poster in college dorm rooms, is a true American classic, emphasizing the bleakness and loneliness of an all-night diner."
"His meteoric rise as a Realist during the 1920s, 30s, and 40s, was followed by an almost equally precipitous fall in the 1950s and 60s, with the rise of Abstract Expressionism," Rigby added. "Hopper died in 1967, too soon to see the renewed interest in his work that would follow shortly after his death. Today, he is celebrated as one of the great American artists of the 20th century, whose paintings offer a unique insight into the fabric of traditional American life."
This piece carries a pre-auction estimate of $25,000 - $30,000.
