Heritage To Auction Rare Dali Watercolor!

Dallas, Texas: Heritage Galleries and Auctioneers (HGA) will offer an exquisite pen and watercolor painting by renowned surrealist artist Salvador Dali in their upcoming Fine Arts auction, to be held May 11, 2005, in their Dallas, Texas headquarters.

"Salvador Felipe Jacinto DalĂ I Domenech was born in Figueres, Spain in 1904," said Lucas Rigby, Consignment Director for HGA. "In 1926, soon after his first one-man show in Paris, Dali joined the surrealist movement, and became one of their leading proponents. Persistence of Memory, with its famous melting watches, is from this period. It didn't take long, however, for the apolitical artist to clash with the more political factions of the movement during World War II, resulting in his "expulsion" from the group. This lead Dali to enter his second, more classical period, in which he focused more on themes of science and religion in his work."

"The piece we're offering," continued Rigby, "is from the height of this second period. This is a small pen and watercolor piece, measuring approximately 11.5" x 13.75", painted in 1965 that features a very bold, yet simple, representation of Christ hanging on the cross. The Crucifixion was a scene that Dali would explore many times, most famously in his Corpus Hypercubus, painted in 1954, which now hangs in New York's Metropolitan Museum."

"Without a doubt," Rigby continued, "Dali was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. This piece represents a master craftsman at the height of his creative talents, and will certainly inspire some spirited bidding."

This piece carries a pre-auction estimate of $10-15,000.
