Important works by Glenna Goodacre, Scott Christensen, Clyde Aspevig Highlight Heritage Auctions' September Art of the West Auction.

More than 150 Western art highlights from multiple significant private collections will be among the top attractions in Heritage Auctions' Art of the West American Art auction Sept. 7 in Dallas, Texas.

The sale will feature a comprehensive selection of bronzes and paintings by important artists of the American West. Among this collection is a handful of works by prolific artist Clyde Aspevig, who is known for his loose, realistic depictions of the vast landscapes across Wyoming and Montana. Also featured in the auction will be Glenna Goodacre, who will celebrate her 80th birthday and 50th anniversary as a sculptor this fall. Goodacre's sculptures are coveted for their lively expression, texture, design and movement. Her beginning career as a painter provided the foundation for her first bronzes created in 1969. In 2003, she was awarded the prestigious Texas Medal Of Arts, and later that year was inducted into the Cowgirl Hall Of Fame in Fort Worth. In October, 2016, she announced her complete retirement from sculpting and casting bronzes. Among her top pieces in the sale is Crossing the Prairie, for which Goodacre won the 2002 James Earl Fraser Sculpture Award at the Prix de West Exhibition in Oklahoma City.

Also included in the sale are works from such notable artists as G. Harvey, Glenna Goodacre, Bev Doolittle, Tucker Smith, Ray Swanson and many more.

"With the strength of the Western Art market, the Art of the West auction is intended to make Western Art accessible to collectors of all levels," said Alissa Ford, Director of Western Art at Heritage Auctions. "This auction is dedicated to the wonders of the West and will include many vistas of our most cherished landmarks of the American West."

A French Enameled Porcelain Plaque with Guilloche and Gilt Bronze Frame
Great and small offerings are waiting to be found Sept. 12 at Heritage Auctions' Online Fine and Decorative Arts Auction.

Whether made as salesman's samples, carpenter's models or children's furniture, the charm of miniature antiques endures. Starting with a group of European architectural models or these Georgian and Parquetry case pieces, offerings continue with French style in a diminutive child's chair and settee and an array of tea caddies and sewing boxes.

Small expands beyond mahogany and walnut. A circa 1940 Steelcraft dirigible model takes off with bidding starting at $1. A ship's model of the fated Edmund Fitzgerald also will have collectors singing. French miniature portraits, Chinese snuff bottles and Georg Jensen silver salts also can satisfy a big taste for small.

Contemporary fine art offerings go small with iconic Hunt Slonem Bunny paintings in white and pink and a wallet-size Banksy Di-Faced Tenner 10 GBP Note.

Bidding for the 353-lot auction is now open through Sept. 12 at HA.com/241937.

School Girl Theorem Painting Bridges Lee Trivino, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Collections in Heritage Auctions' OnLine Fine and Decorative art auction

American School Still Life with Fruit

American School Still Life with Fruit
The worlds of swashbuckling golf legend Lee Trevino and American style icon Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis collide in a charming school girl painting that is among 353 offerings in Heritage Auctions' Fine and Decorative Arts Auction Sept. 12.

This type of colored stenciled decoration on a velvet fabric ground is known as a theorem painting, a style that was a staple of New England education for girls in the 1800s. Considered essential to a girl's education, painting and needlework taught patience and sometimes developed talent. Not all pupils had natural artistic abilities, however, and the practice of using a stencil was both efficient and democratizing. Matthew Finn's 1830 treatise, Therometical System of Painting or Modern Plan fully Explained in Six Lessons by Which a Child of Tender Years can be Taught the Sublime Art in One Week was widely applied, and American schoolgirls learned techniques of paint mixing, shading and composition.

The theorem painting here is of classic form, with a blue bird perched atop an abundance of flowers and fruit. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis revived scholarship in American Classical period decorative arts of the 1820s and 1830s with her thoughtful renovation work at the White House from 1961-63. This painting, though modest, is from that American Classical era, and fits her interests.

Bought the painting at a 1996 auction of the former First Lady's collection, the painting and other art from the Trevino collection are open for bidding now through Sept. 12 at HA.com/241937.

Heritage Auctions Takes the Bull by the Horns with Cattle Baron Sofa and Chair in Sept. 12 Online Fine and Decorative Arts Auction

Born in Bohemia but with destiny in the American West, horn furniture takes Austro-Hungarian Lusterweibchen hunting lodge forms into Cattle Country parlors. Bidding is open now for Heritage Auctions' Sept. 12 Fine and Decorative Arts Auction with a historic horn sofa and armchair parlor suite from a Midwestern collector.

An American Upholstered Longhorn Armchair

An American Upholstered Horn Sofa

American School Still Life with Fruit

A European tradition for centuries, horn furniture became an international craze in the 1851 London World Exhibition, that included chairs, a sofa and a mirror by Hamburg artisan H.F.C. Rampendahl. They were acquired by Queen Victoria, and now are in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Other horn furniture stars from this era are Germans Gustav Lorenz, Henrich Keitel, Kurt Schicker, and most notably American immigrants Herman Metz, Charles Puppe, William Mittmann, The Appell Brothers, August Biesenbach and Friedrich Wenzel, who immigrated from Grunthal, Bohemia to Indianola, Texas in 1853 and began selling Texas longhorn furniture out of his San Antonio warerooms in 1880. Wenzel won awards at the 1883 Cincinnati Industrial Exhibition, the 1884 New Orleans Cotton Centennial Exhibition and the 1886 Louisville Southern Exhibition. Cattlemen from Texas to Chicago were understandably smitten with horn furniture and supported a robust trade for the next 40 years, until the 1920s.

The chair and sofa offered Sept. 12 by Heritage Auctions are wonderfully preserved and retains its antique upholstery with full fringe. "The suite is at once exotic and rugged," Heritage Auctions furniture specialist Rachel Weathers said. "The horns, of course, make us think of a cattle drive, but the tufts, button and fringe upholstery are pure Ottoman. It is a real cattle baron group."

Bidding on these and 351 other fine and decorative arts lots is open until Sept. 12 at HA.com/241937.

Oklahoma Price Tower Frank Lloyd Wright Fireplace Heats Up Heritage Auctions' 20th Century Design Auction

Frank Lloyd Wright
Relief Panel from Price Tower, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, 1956
Frank Lloyd Wright never fit his work into a box. The 19-story Price Tower, the only fully realized Wright skyscraper in existence, was completed for a Bartlesville, Oklahoma site in 1956, but in defiance of Bauhaus cubes dominating American Mid-Century Modern architecture of the 1950s. Wright's Price Tower designs eschew glass boxes in favor of faceted jewel-like "pinwheel" forms in a style that came to be known as Wright's "Crystalline" group with few 90-degree angles.

The best example of this collection a Price Tower Apartment Fireplace, which will be the first complete example to be offered at auction when it crosses the block in Heritage Auctions' Design Auction Oct. 1 in Dallas, Texas. The fascia panels on the fireplace complement the Price Tower façade panels adorning every other floor of the tower exterior and some interior locations, as well. The stamped copper panels have a warm, natural presence with oxidation and shapes invoking American Indian basketwork, pottery and blankets and topographical views of the Great Plains, appropriate motifs for an Oklahoma skyscraper that create harmony between the exterior to the interior of the building.

From the Price Tower commissary dining area and terrace is one of 20 copper-clad tables with a trapezoidal top and two of the 40 hexagonal copper stools. The detailed edges on these pieces echo the plinth on the Apartment Fireplace and Harold Price, Sr.'s desk.

Also offered is one of the 40 iconic Price Tower Casual chairs with original red upholstery and silvered aluminum, and one of fourteen Stenographer's Chairs. The back spines and other elements of these chairs originally were designed in wood to create sand casts in aluminum by the Blue Stem Foundry in Dewey, Oklahoma. Wright designed these chairs to improve posture with the trapezoid back tilted forward and firm upholstered padding. Other Price Tower offerings include a desk, cabinet and wastebasket, all with acute angles typical of Wright's work.

Wright's modernism is warm, complex and as typical of his work, conceived with a specific American place in mind. The Price Tower, in all its hand-crafted detail, is a jewel of the American prairie.

This collection of Frank Lloyd Wright furniture has been privately held by the Price family until now, and can be viewed at ha.com. Items can be previewed Sept. 30 in Heritage Auctions' Design District Showroom, at 1518 Slocum Street, Dallas, Texas.

Peter Fonda Tribute

Peter Fonda Signed 'Ballad of Easy Rider' LP with Memorabilia
Peter Fonda was a beloved American film and pop culture icon who will be dearly missed by the staff of Heritage Auctions. We had the pleasure of working with Peter in 2007 when we sold many key artifacts for him, including the flag patch from the back of his Easy Rider jacket. It's a testimonial to the importance of that movie, which Peter produced, co-wrote and starred in, that a collector paid nearly $90,000 for that patch.

Fonda was a key link, of course, in the legendary Hollywood film family that started with Henry Fonda in the 1930s, continued with Peter and his sister Jane Fonda, and moved forward another generation with Emmy-and Golden Globe-nominated actress Bridget Fonda, Peter's daughter. As a five-year-old, Bridget even appeared in Easy Rider as a child in a commune. Peter's career reached new heights with his Academy Award-nominated performance in the title role of Ulee's Gold in 1997.

But it was Peter's incredibly warm, engaging personality that so endeared him to the staff of Heritage. To a person, if you ask anyone who worked with Peter on the selling of his artifacts, they will describe a genuinely friendly, down-to-earth and caring person with no ego and a bottomless pit of fascinating show-business and pop-culture stories from the 1960's and beyond, all of which he was willing and eager to share. "Peter was a genuinely nice, interesting and highly intelligent person, with an incredible memory and storytelling ability," says Heritage co-founder Jim Halperin, adding that Fonda went out of his way to stay in touch with Heritage staff over the ensuing decade.

Indeed, Heritage has worked with countless celebrities over the years, but none were more likeable than Mr. Fonda, who 'easily rode' his way into our hearts and will always remain firmly ensconced there. We were lucky to have him on this planet for 79 years, and Heritage offers its condolences to the entire Fonda family.
