High interest and curiosity drive Gentleman Collector Signature Auction at Heritage Auctions
Ear trumpet
An Attic Black-Figured Neck-Amphora, attributed to the Edinburgh Painter, Attica Region, Greece, circa 510 BC realized $50,000 in Heritage Auctions' January 19 Gentleman Collectors Signature Auction. Growing interest and curiosity drove bidding that ultimately realized $685,724 in total sales for the fourth installment of an event that began in 2012 with offerings from the Malcolm Forbes collection. This year's auction had an impressive sell-through rate exceeding 85 percent.

"This was a really good event for Heritage Auctions and our clients. This is definitely a growing segment and the idea of gentleman collectors goes back 400 years. The history and craftsmanship of many of these items are tremendous additions to our collectors and we were very pleased with the high sell-through rate," said Nick Dawes, Vice-President of Special Collections.

The Attic Black-Figured Neck-Amphora took top lot honors at $50,000. The vase, possibly a Panathenaic prize amphora, with double-reeded handles, features two males boxing with a referee looking on. A similar example with identical palmettes and beaded decoration to neck and shoulders resides in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

An attractive pair of bronze figures described as an Impressive Pair of Franz Bergman Cold-Painted Bronzes: The Tiger Hunt sold for $18,750. The pair of bronzes depicting Kashmiri figures holding scepters atop elephants, dead tigers draped across saddle blankets tied down with ropes.

Collectible and decorative biscuit tins were also an active group for collectors with two London Double-Decker Bus Biscuit Tins, circa 1920-30, Crawford's Shortbread, Huntley & Palmers selling for $8,250. The two tins comprised models by Crawford's Shortbread, Huntley & Palmers. Overall the group sold through at 99 percent for a total value of $75,400.

An impressive microscope collection which came from a prominent West Coast collector and rivals those from many museums were offered at no reserve. The collection sold through at 91 percent for a total price of $31,062.50. It was led by the Rare Cased Smith and Beck Binocular Microscope with Thomas Glazebrook Rylands Archive, circa 1858, which realized $5,250.

An eye-catching conversation piece, a Rare German Silver and Carved Wood Mazer Covered Owl Cup after a design by Jakob Christoph Mentzinger from the late 16th or early 17th century, gaveled at $4,250, ahead of its $1,200-1,600 estimate. An identical example dating to 1570 resides in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Historic $57+ Million Year for Heritage Auctions' Sports Department

Charles Conlon photographs
Heritage Auctions' Sports recorded the most successful fiscal year in the history of the industry in 2016, building upon over a decade of sustained growth to surpass $57 million in annual sales. Dozens of pricing records were shattered en route to the unequaled annual sales mark, including the first post-war trading card ever to command a seven-figure winning bid, a PSA NM-MT+ 8.5 example of the fabled Topps Mickey Mantle rookie card.

The Charles Conlon Collection, an unrivaled collection of baseball photographs, set the mark as the most valuable lot that Heritage Sports has sold at auction. Significant high-grade and low population sports cards dominated the sports auction landscape as seen below with the remaining Top 10 prices realized in 2016.
