An Ogoni Elu Mask with Plaited Hair...
Description
An Ogoni Elu Mask with Plaited HairNiger Delta, Nigeria, c. early 20th century
Of strikingly thick oval form, this Elu mask presents a smooth, egg-shaped face coated with white kaolin pigment, now darkened from long storage and exposure to smoke. The hair and facial features are stained with black pigment, providing dramatic contrast to the pale ground. The coiffure is elaborately rendered with plaited hair culminating in braids descending along each side of the face. Subtle details such as the gently arched brows, upturned, pointed nose, and large lips enliven the otherwise serene physiognomy. In good condition, appropriate for age, mediums, and origin; the white kaolin darkened from exposure, some scuffs and paint loss here and there, the back perimeter rubbed from use. With a stand.
Although Elu masks were broadly used in Ogoni festival masquerades-both satirical and didactic-the refined modeling and detailed coiffure of this example suggest a more personal conception. Scholars have proposed that some Elu masks were conceived as portraits, possibly of admired young women, embodying ideals of youthful beauty and virtue. Elu masks were often performed under the aegis of the Ekpo society, the ancestral masquerade association that combined judicial authority with ritual performance. In Ekpo contexts, masks like this served not only as entertainment but also as moral exemplars and reminders of the ever-present authority of the ancestors. The carefully rendered hairstyle and distinctive nasal feature in this example strengthen the impression of an individualized likeness within a broader cycle of socially instructive masquerade.
