An Igbo Ula Onu Cap Mask...
Description
An Igbo Ula Onu Cap MaskInyi region, Nigeria, c. early 20th century
Carved as a zoomorphic head, this classic Ula Onu cap mask combines animal and human traits. The elongated snout is defined with a human-like nose and the small slit eyes are inset with glass, each set within a wide circular frame incised with linear decoration. Large oval ears at the sides, while a pair of tapering horns crowns the top of the head. Remains of white pigment on the surface, contrasting with darker brown coloration around the eye circles and horns. In very good condition, white pigment flaked. With a stand.
"Ula Onu -The Animal Spirit Headdress" represents the idea that when you do bad things people talk about your mis-behaviour. This is a solo masquerade worn by a vigorous young man who does not dance, but rather races through the village gardens and pathways. It also comes to feasts and to burials without being invited. Even though this looks like a mask, the eyes are not pierced. It is worn on the forehead, sewn to a stocking cap." From Traditional Igbo Art: 1966.
