Description

Trona
Searles Lake, San Bernardino County, California, USA
19.8 x 16.6 x 6.2 cm (7.80 x 6.54 x 2.44 in)

The majority of the United States' Sodium Carbonate, which is often used in the making of glass, detergent, and paper, comes from the mineral Trona. Offered here, however, is a specimen-grade example of the evaporite mineral that presents dozens of smaller, blade-like crystals across the foreground, leading up to a thicker and more condensed plateau of larger Trona crystals. All of the crystals are transparent with an almost honey-yellow and rugged texture. Under shortwave UV light, the crystals strongly fluoresce white and show nice levels of phosphorescence.

From the collection of Daniel "Dan" R. Kennedy.
