PROVENANCE:
Private collection, New York.

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, Lidya Buzio has worked in clay in New York since 1972, creating abstract volumes and cityscapes. She produced works unique to the medium, forming a distinctive fusion of painting and sculpture in terracotta.

Garth Clark, one of the foremost authorities on ceramics, wrote of his impression upon first encountering a Buzio work: "It was of magical unity - form, color, and material were all one. The imagery of downtown Manhattan hugged the vessel's sensual, curving shape, disappearing and reemerging from its volume in a constant kinetic shifting inward and outward. It possessed a quality of being both ancient and contemporary at the same time."

Buzio's work is represented in the Painting and Sculpture Collection of the Brooklyn Museum; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C.; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art; the Everson Museum of Art; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; and in other museum and private collections internationally.

Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000.
