This part gilt and niello snuffbox centers a coin commemorating the coronation of Empress Elizabeth I Petrovna in 1742. The original coin, engraved by S. Yudin, and V. Klimov shows the Empress in profile on the face, and in her coronation robes on the obverse. Boxes of this type, containing coins from earlier eras, were popular at the end of the reign of Catherine II. A Muscovite example was sold Christie's London, June 7, 2011, lot 36.
