Description

Clinohumite with Spinel
Luc Yen Mine, Lục Yên District, Yên Bái Province, Vietnam
17 x 11 x 11 cm (6.69 x 4.33 x 4.33 in)

For reasons beyond its colorful and very aesthetic presentation, this is a truly staggering specimen! The primary focus of the specimen is a single immense crystal of Clinohumite, measuring 11.9 x 6.5 centimeters, that is perched on a pure white field of marble. The crystal stands out with a rich burnt orange color that is intensified by shallow pockets of gemminess. Generous groups of Spinel are scattered across the rest of the matrix, balancing the specimen with rich swatches of violet-red; most of the Spinel has an octahedral habit with a few contact twins mixed in. If you were to look very closely, a couple petite crystals of Spinel have grown inside the indentation at the top of the Clinohumite, best seen under UV light as the Spinel will fluoresce a fiery red color. This piece comes with a custom acrylic base.

From the collection of Daniel "Dan" R. Kennedy.
