A Nazca Painted Drum...
Description
A Nazca Painted DrumPeru, Early Intermediate Period, c. 100-700 AD
Painted hide stretched over oval frame made from joined wood slats. This rare Nazca drum is painted to imitate a woven tie-dyed textile. One side painted in a yellow oval. The stepped fret motifs echo patterns found in Nazca fabrics, while the white circles suggest pseudo tie-dyed designs. The surface thus links musical performance with the visual world of textiles, an art form highly prized in Nazca culture. Drums of this type are shown in figurines and were typically played together with panpipes. Their combined sound and vivid painted surfaces contributed to the multisensory impact of Nazca ritual ceremonies. In good, restored condition, appropriate for age, origin, and materials; some holes, scrapes, restoration along edges, loss of hide in two areas exposing wood slats, separations and losses throughout.
