Description
A Soviet Porcelain Figure of A Woman With A Broken JugLomonosov State Porcelain Factory, Leningrad, 1936-1940
7-1/4 x 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 inches (18.4 x 11.4 x 11.4 cm)
After the model by Stepan Pimenov (Russian, 1784-1833), this figure was produced by the Imperial Porcelain Factory first between 1817 and 1820. The model returned to production in the 1920s. For another figure, see Christie's London, November 23, 2020, lot 272. For more information and comparable figures, see T.N. Nosovich, I.P. Popova, Gosudarstvennyi Farforovyi Zavod, 1904-1944, St Petersburg, 2005, p. 608.
Pimenov was born in St. Petersburg as the son of a customs official. Recognizing his talent at a young age, his parents enrolled him in the Academy of Arts when he was 11. There, he displayed exceptional skill, earning a silver medal in 1801 for his skill, followed by a gold medal the next year for his bas-relief titled "Jupiter and Mercury in the Guise of Wayfarers Visiting Philemon and Baucis."
Pimenov later contributed to the Imperial Porcelain Factory, where he collaborated with I. Komander on figures for the "Guriev Service," considered some of the finest examples of 19th-century Russian porcelain. His contemporaries noted that Pimenov's work was characterized by "powerful, passionate composition and spirited, sweeping modeling."
