Pursued is a new screen print by Ella Kruglyanskaya, produced on occasion of the 2019 LA Art Book Fair. The central figure is drawn in sweeping and exact gestures, a woman being pursued, or in pursuit of something outside the frame. Kruglyanskaya's work is often fraught with drama and humor. Here is the female protagonist set against a backdrop of pop-culture and glamour, exhausted and at the same time empowered by her environment.
Ella Kruglyanskaya is a contemporary Latvian painter known for her stylized depictions of female figures engage in various actions. Kruglyanskaya's practice intends to engage with the historical tropes of Western painting in regard to the female figure and update these conventions. While her influences vary, they include and the fashion and film posters of the 1950s. "Humor is really important in my work. Also humor is a very modern feature of art," she has explained. "There is something quite modern in this attitude that we don't take ourselves so seriously." Born in 1978 in Riga, Latvia, she emigrated to the United States in the 1990s, receiving her BFA in painting from Cooper Union in 2001 and her MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2006. Kruglyanskaya continues to live and work in New York, NY. Today, her works are held in the collections of the Broad Museum in Los Angeles and the Tate Modern in London.
