DAVID BURLIUK (Ukrainian, 1882-1967)Handwritten personal letter, 1966
Ink on paper
11 x 8-1/2 inches (27.9 x 21.6 cm)
Signed verso: David Marussia Burliuk
A personal letter from the artist David Burliuk to his close friends Sandra and Mervin Goldman. The letter speaks of their mutual understanding of the enigma of art and its power to realize dreams. Burliuk speaks intimately of his health in his later years and despite some minor complaints considers himself to be "happy." He recounts that they are getting ready to reprint some postcards of his works, one of which has been saved along with the letter. In the closing he has added a charming postscript that he was 18 years old on January 31, 1899 when he and his parents celebrated the turning of the century saying "Happy New Year! 20th Century we welcome you!"
