The collage works that Nancy Grossman created during the mid-1970s hold a distinctive place within her oeuvre, expanding upon her recurring themes of identity, autonomy, and self-expression. Known primarily for her provocative leather-wrapped head sculptures, which explore constraints on individual freedom, Grossman turned to collage as a medium to further delve into similar subjects while experimenting with new forms of visual language. By layering images from various sources, Grossman was able to piece together complex, often surreal portraits that emphasize the layered, constructed nature of identity.
