Description

Ammolite Fossil
Placenticeras sp.
Late Cretaceous
Bearpaw Formation
Alberta, Canada
2.80 x 1.89 x 0.63 inches (7.10 x 4.79 x 1.60 cm)

Only a handful of biogenic materials are recognized as gemstones, and Ammolite is one of the rarest gemstones in the world. This popular material, also considered a fossil, is exclusively found in the Bearpaw Formation in Alberta, Canada in fossilized Ammonite shells. This particular example is on the smaller side at 2.80 inches ( 7.10 cm), but still shines with a range of green, gold, and red flashes as well as hints of the highly desirable blue and purple hues. The texture is indicative of the coveted "dragon's skin" patterning.
