Bob Scriver did not take up sculpting as a full time artistic pursuit until the age of forty-six. In fact, his undergraduate and graduate training was in music rather than art. He grew up on the Blackfeet reservation town of Browning, Montana, where he opened a taxidermy business after a stint in the army. It was his training in that field that prepared him so well for sculpting with great precision and realism the animals of the Rocky Mountains, such as moose, elk, deer, and grizzly bears. In addition to animal studies, Scriver produced many sculptures depicting the historic and modern lives of the Blackfeet Indians. In 1969, the tribe honored Scriver with the presentation of the Little Dog Thunder Medicine Pipe, an honor afforded few outside of the tribe. In all, he produced over 1,000 sculptures in his career, all done at an age when some people are already looking toward retirement. Of his career, Scriver said, "My only problem is that it took me half a lifetime to decide what I really wanted to do with my life." Once he did, he excelled at that pursuit.
