OTIS DOZIER (American, 1904-1987)
Cactus and Bird, 1947
Serigraph
12-1/4 x 16 inches (31.1 x 40.6 cm)
Signed and dated in pencil lower right in margin: Otis Dozier '47

EXHIBITED:
Dallas Museum for Contemporary Arts (now Dallas Museum of Art), Otis Dozier Exhibition, 1956.

LITERATURE:
C. Steinfeldt, Art for History's Sake: The Texas Collection of the Witte Museum, Texas State Historical Association, Austin, 1993, p. 58.

The Witte Museum owns one of Otis Dozier's Cactus and Bird serigraphs (not a silkscreen; silkscreen is the process) once owned by Eleanor Onderdonk. According to Cecilia Steinfeldt's catalogue entry on this serigraph in her book Art for History's Sake: The Texas Collection of the Witte Museum (p. 58), "This print evidently was based upon a canvas with the same date and title, shown at Dozier's retrospective exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts in 1956. Silkscreened by Dan Wingren, a student of Dozier's and a fine painter and printmaker in his own right, it was a gift to Eleanor Onderdonk in 1948. It was a welcome addition to the Texas Collection when Eleanor donated it in 1964."

Birds and plants were favorite Dozier motifs: roadrunner and prickly pear; roosters and melons; grackles and melons; cactus and bird.
