PROVENANCE:
Private collection, Beaumont, Texas.
Rolla Sims Taylor was born in Galveston, Texas. He began painting in 1890 and moved to San Antonio the following year. He studied with Robert Onderdonk and Jose Arpa, and was later influenced by Julian Onderdonk. In addition to receiving a law degree from the Cuero Institute, Cuero, Texas, Taylor was a charter member of the Coppini Academy of Fine Arts and a member of the Texas Fine Arts Association. He exhibited in the 1910 Cotton Carnival and other San Antonio competitions.
Condition Report*:
Under UV exam, there appears to be brushy retouches in the upper left quadrant sky, in the sloping hill in the lower left quadrat and a few small scattered spots in the tree line fluoresce. Frame abrasion most notable along the upper edge. Uneven, yellowed varnish.
