Description
FLUORITE "TOADSTOOL"Minerva #1 Mine, Ozark-Mahoning Group, Cave-in-Rock Sub-Dist., Hardin Co., Illinois, USA
The sheer variety of things produced by the Minerva Mine is not all that obvious when you notice that there are only 19 valid minerals that which have been found at this locality. Most specimens are multi-colored variations on the dominant theme, which is: FLUORITE. That being said, this is a real outlier - a piece so weird that it defies description - a piece that looks like a Dali vision of two mushrooms.
The possible explanations for the growth of this odd form are all sufficiently arcane that we will leave the conjectures to others. These "etched" Fluorites occasionally appear, but not usually on matrix and not usually accompanied by Aragonite needles and a small amount of brilliantly lustrous Sphalerite, as is the situation here. The matrix appears to be a strangely etched Fluorite crust that grew on a now-vanished mineral of reniform habit. This specimen is in pristine condition with brilliant glassy luster shown by the un-etched purple Fluorite.
Overall Measurements: 5 x 3.43 x 2.77 inches (12.7 x 8.71 x 7.04 cm)
