NOTE:
Larry Faden spear-headed the Alliance of Figurative Artists in New York, an artist-run discussion group frequented by a majority of the figurative and realist painters and sculptors in New York City in the 1970s. The group was active from February 14, 1969 until the 1980s. The first three meetings were held in artists lofts and studios and thereafter at the Educational Alliance, 197 East Broadway, NYC. Although open to all without membership it was intended as a form for figurative and realistic painters and sculptors who felt isolated in the then current art world dominated by abstract and pop styles. The panels and individual speakers were usually artists. "Bring work" nights were also held. They would passionately thrash out the issues they felt were crucial to "new figuration" including the pertinence of various subjects, approaches to narration, brush expressionism versus "fingernail" realism, wet versus dry painting, and the problems they faced in representing the three-dimensional world without irony. Over the years, Ted Pillsbury acquired works by several of the artists associated with this group including Phillip Pearlstein, William Bailey, Gabriel Laderman, Al Leslie, Rackstraw Downes, and Larry Faden. Downes is also represented in this sale.
Faden trained at the Studio School during the 1960s, and exhibited his work at The Bowery Gallery from 1969 on. One of his favorite subjects is the artist's studio, cluttered with many sources of inspiration tacked to the walls and stacked up all around.
