Fossil Red Horn Coral in Matrix. Lophophyllidium sp.. Pennsylvanian . Morgan Formation...
Description
Fossil Red Horn Coral in MatrixLophophyllidium sp.
Pennsylvanian
Morgan Formation
Kamas, Utah, USA
A striking red Agatized Horn Coral from the Pennsylvanian-aged Morgan Formation of Utah, featuring several robust coral branches emerging naturally from the surrounding brown Limestone matrix. Once part of an ancient coral reef system that now rests high in the Utah mountains, this specimen beautifully illustrates the dramatic geologic uplift of the region. During fossilization, the original coral skeleton was replaced by Silica and trace minerals, resulting in the vivid red coloration and gemlike translucency seen here. Material of this type is no longer actively mined and has become increasingly scarce in the marketplace. A fine and colorful example of Paleozoic coral preservation, combining aesthetic appeal with geological significance.
