Description

Libyan Desert Glass

Libyan Desert Glass Sphere
Libyan Desert Glass Area
Great Sand Sea
Western Desert, Egypt

Meteorites not only leave behind material in the form of falls but also can create secondary events, resulting in additional materials in the form of an impactite. These can occur in a number of forms, including Libyan Desert Glass, which is relatively uncommon and highly collectible. This example of the popular "LDG" material weighs 63.8 grams but is most notable for having been fashioned as a sphere. Of course, a much larger piece of such material was required to make the orb, measuring 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in diameter, which is cloudy and displays both light and dark shades of greenish hues, which are muted and mysterious. Only minor scratching is visible and tactile over the exterior of the small sphere out of the "Great Sand Sea" in the Libyan Desert. While pieces of Libyan Desert Glass are often seen for sale, examples made into objects, like spheres, are few and far between.
Measurements: 1.50 inches (3.80 cm) in diameter, weighs 63.8 grams
