This large cabinet specimen comes from the historic Cobalt area of Canada, which was first documented by acclaimed explorer Jacques Cartier. Between the years 1535 and 1536, Cartier met with a local indigenous tribe who directed him to a large deposit of Silver, up the Ottawa River and near the Laurentians, where this specimen eventually was excavated from. The massive single vein of Silver is presented atop a Diabase matrix and was extracted from the surrounding host rock in a way that maintains the original shape of the vein: relatively flat and elongated, where it filled into a crack in the stone. The metallic luster of the Silver is overlaid in some areas by a lovely patina.
