Description

Gypsum var. Selenite on Calcite
Bisbee
Cochise County
Arizona, USA

Gypsum specimens from the famed Bisbee locality in Arizona are quite uncommon, making this cabinet-sized offering rare. This Selenite on Calcite example features a grouping of crystals fondly known as "ram's horns." The orange Calcite plate hosts a trifecta of curvilinear Selenite crystals with essentially a large, a medium, and a small crystal in a cluster with a further sprinkling of dozens of other "horns" across the majority of the plate. The main crystal is classic in form, thick for the variety, and measures a sizable 2.75 x 1.37 inches (7 x 3.5 cm). This primary crystal has also 'split' during formation, creating two distinct terminations producing a powerful display piece. The iconic curved Gypsum crystals are colorless featuring excellent luster and display an overall glistening appearance. This dramatic specimen is in excellent condition and is sure to be a conversation starter in any finer collector's cabinet.
Measurements: 7.48 x 6.69 x 3.82 inches (19.00 x 17.00 x 9.70 cm)

Provenance: Ex. Dr. Barratt L. Philips Collection
