Description
Fossil Pig SkullArchaeotherium mortoni
Oligocene
Brule Formation
White River Badlands, South Dakota, USA
This truly monstrous skull belonged to an Entelodont back in the Oligocene also referred to as "hell pigs" or "terminator pigs" which populated the Badlands for some 20 million years between 15 and 35 million years ago. The apex predator resembled a modern-day peccary and is noteworthy for the projections off the sides of the skull, which presumably were used to carry muscle tissue. This magnificent skull, offered on a custom James Vilona layered metal base, is big and ominous, with an elongated snout, and teeth of various sizes. The preserved bone material is a bleachy, off-white color and exhibits a typical restoration. One of the large teeth evidences a secondary repair, and the work on the overall skull was performed at an expert level. The giant specimen is dramatic for its size, impressive for its condition and very unusual.
Overall Measurements: 22.00 x 20.00 x 16.50 inches (55.88 x 50.80 x 41.91 cm)
