Description

Ammonite Fossil
Argonauticeras besairiei
Early Cretaceous
Ambatolafia, Ambarimaninga Region
Mahajanga Province, Madagascar

This is a truly substantial Ammonite with a great deal to offer. Thick and solid, this well-preserved cephalopod is an ideal diagnostic example of the variety as the attributes that define the unique group - complex suture lines and marginal placement of the siphuncle - are uncharacteristically prominent on this fossil. Exquisite on both sides, the invertebrate specimen has been expertly and carefully prepared for display, and the combination of color, form, shape, and quality of this piece is absolutely sublime. The tactile texture of the offering adds to the overall charm of the specimen, and the fossil has been fully restored to the end of the outer chamber, which is rather uncommon. Dating to the Early Cretaceous, this product of Madagascar is a superb example from the location. Representing an Argonauticeras besairiei, this is a collector's piece, that is amazing on both sides. The naturally artistic and striking spiral-shaped form is enhanced by colorful, patterned sections. The massive and robust cephalopod measures nearly 8 inches (20 cm) at its maximum dimension and is accompanied by a custom metal armature for ease of display.
Ammonite Measurements: 7.68 x 7.09 x 3.54 inches (19.50 x 18.00 x 9.00 cm)
