Description

Azurite
Czar Mine? (Czar Shaft), Bisbee, Warren District
Mule Mountains, Cochise Co.
Arizona, USA

While this lovely combination specimen of Azurite, Malachite and possibly Native Copper (?) is certainly from the Bisbee District, it's attribution to the Czar Mine, while probable, is not supported by any accompanying documentation, in spite of the fact that two different collection numbers are attached to the specimen. In appearance it displays the classic Bisbee combination of well-formed and lustrous Azurite crystals of an even Indigo Blue coloration scattered over a dark brown-black botryoidal gossan cavity lining with discrete clusters of dark green Malachite interspersed with the Azurite. Deeper layers mix iron oxides with hues from deep red to light ocher, in a roughly banded fashion. This is also very characteristic of Bisbee material. The Azurite shows an atypical, almost pyramidal habit that is very likely from the Czar Mine or near it. It is in excellent to pristine condition and bears 2 collection numbers on the obverse "3499" & "060."
Measurements: 4.0 x 3.0 x 2.5 inches (10.2 x 7.6 x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: Keith Proctor [Hoppel #D1595]
