Description

Axinite-(Fe)
Puiva Mount, Saranpaul, Berezovo district, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Russia
11.1 x 6.1 x 2.3 cm (4.36 x 2.40 x 0.90 in)

Axinite, and the iron-rich species in particular, has a distinct color that is best described as similar to Coca-Cola: the color is a rich brown, with subtle pleochroism that changes from reddish to purplish depending on the angle of view. The color is deep in the center of the crystal, but graduates sharply into near-colorless transparency towards the very edges of the Axinite, mostly due to how razor-sharp and beveled the edges become, like a sword. Because of the delicacy of the edges, there is some minor chipping. The most important aspect of this specimen is the size relative to the completeness: this is a fully crystallized, doubly-terminated, no-contact single crystal of Axinite, with a few sidecars as a bonus. Otherwise known as a "floater," this specimen was formed without any matrix: a complete crystal (at 11 cm across too!) for you to enjoy.
