We Seven: by The Astronauts Themselves
First Edition
This First Edition of We Seven chronicles the development of America's manned space program in an engaging first-hand account of the astronauts who lived it. These first seven were chosen to lead the initiative and included now famous names of M. Scott Carpenter, L. Gordon Cooper, Jr., John H. Glenn, Jr., Virgil I. Grissom, Walter M. Schirra, Jr., Alan B. Shepard, Jr., and Donald K. Slayton. Wally Schirra and Scott Carpenter, as well as Richard Gordon - who was not technically an original seven astronaut per this rollcall but was most certainly a member of the pioneering fraternity - and, most importantly, one of only 24 people to have flown to the Moon, all signed the volume on the half-title page. The Schirra signature is in blue ink. The Carpenter and Gordon signatures are in black inks of differing thickness. Boasting a clearcoat dust jacket, this hardcover is full of black & white photo illustrations, with color images on the title page and endpapers. Given the popularity of "The Right Stuff" film and its true story, it is not surprising such astronauts have captured the imagination of a majority of Americans for decades. In this first-hand writing, each astronaut of the "Mercury Seven" provides their own perspective on the amazing time of the inaugural manned space flight program. The book exhibits expected yellowing of the pages, especially on the edges, and has considerable wear on the bottom edges. The dust jacket is splotchy, and there is minor staining on the reverse of the cover. The fact that three original astronauts have autographed this book makes it a collectible.
New York: Simon and Schuster, Inc., 1962. First Edition. Signed in blue and black ink and black Sharpie® by Wally Schirra, Scott Carpenter, and Richard Gordon on the half-title page. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket; 6.75 x 9.75 inches].
