Description

Odessa Meteorite End Cut - 1,034.9 Grams
Iron, IAB-MG
Ector County, Texas, USA - (31° 43'N, 102° 24'W)
Found: 1922

Before discussing an individual specimen, it is fair to comment on the uniqueness and significance of the Odessa Crater that produced it. The site in far West Texas represents a rare occurrence of an Iron meteorite impact crater - where associated fragments have been recovered. One of only three impact crater sites in the state, the Odessa Meteor Crater is cone-shaped and shallow with a depth of just about 17 feet (5.2 m). While many fragments are complete specimens with a not particularly attractive appearance, this end cut has no such problem. While this "dual threat" piece does show the natural exterior features to be expected the cut and etched display surface is one very different and contrasting story. The smooth and silvery face offers a subtle Widmanstätten pattern, with the alternating "light and dark" effect that really makes the rock from space "pop" with a considerable vibrancy. Weighing 1,035 grams (2.3 pounds), this representation, classified as a Main Group Iron, IAB, meteorite, is one of the truly best "Odessas" likely to be seen. A seriously iconic Iron meteorite, especially given its Lone Star State origins, there is no doubt this is both a highly collectible and a visually dramatic meteorite. Measuring over 4 inches (10 cm) across, this is a fine size for a case specimen.
Measurements: 4.29 x 3.76 x 1.21 inches (10.90 x 9.54 x 3.07 cm), weighs 1,034.9 grams
