Every so often a fossil will really tell a story and offer multiple dimensions for its interpretation. This is one of those unique instances. While on its surface just a partial Dinosaur track from the famous Portland Formation in Connecticut, this 'positive' footprint of Anchisauripus, an ichnogenus variety known only from trace fossils, is the result of a very intriguing process. When originally created, the mud was nice and wet; then, when the track hardened, the mud cracked apart, and in this case, the cracks ran through the track and off the rock. This fossil of the three-toed theropod, with an elongated and pronounced middle digit, exhibits an oily luster, possibly due to typical enhancement, and has a monstrous matrix of reddish rock with a smattering of metallic flecks. The extremely thick, rocky background is irregularly shaped and quite heavy. The partial track measures over 5 inches (13 cm) from tip to the end of the rock on which it is situated and makes for one dramatic display specimen.
