Description

Dinosauria

Mounted Dinosaur Femur
Hadrosaurid
Cretaceous
Two Medicine Formation
Montana

This complete left femur from a "duck-billed" Dinosaur known as a Hadrosaurid is from the famed Two Medicine Formation of Montana and dates to the Cretaceous Period some 70 million years ago. Found during the summer of 1996, the elegant bone is artfully displayed in a custom metal stand making it an impressive display piece. The femur is typically the largest bone, and it certainly has an appealing shape. Nearly two feet long, the fossil bone is sizable and exhibits a rich dark brown coloration tending towards
gray at the ends. Both of the naturally split "knuckles" are intact on the ends of the leg bone which has some shallow cracking likely due to compression of the bone during fossilization. The trochanter is also pronounced on the specimen which is where the muscles would have attached to the upper part of the "thigh" bone. The rustic metal stand is sturdy, with a medium brown coloration and matte finish which does not compete with the bone for which it was made. Virtually most any Dinosaur fossil is something special, and a complete bone, especially a femur, surely has some cachet. This North American Dinosaur fossil comes from a region prolific for producing fine examples of the very sought after variety of fossils.
