Description

Libyan Desert Glass
Libyan Desert Glass Area
Great Sand Sea
Western Desert, Egypt

A rather large individual specimen, this fine example of Libyan Desert Glass impactite weighs a stout 503 grams. With an excellent shape, a complex texture, and a high translucency, this representation displays 'melt' features and white mineral spherules known as Cristoablites that form at very high temperatures. These unusual inclusions add a layer of complexity to this already unique material, and this dimensional offering has a wonderful visual duality with a surface texture that is partially smooth and partially rough. The color of this substantial piece is classic yellowish-green, and the chunk has a considerable dimpling, including some deep craters near the tip of the smoother end. Minor sandy matrix is randomly visible, giving further insight into its origin.
Measurements: 3.97 x 3.45 x 2.56 inches (10.08 x 8.76 x 6.50 cm), weighs 503.2 grams

Provenance: The Geoff Notkin Collection
