Description

Native Gold
Eagle's Nest Mine, Sage Hill, Michigan Bluff Mining District, Placer Co., California, USA
5.0 x 3.3 x 0.6 cm (1.97 x 1.30 x 0.24 in)
15 grams

The intricate shape of this flat, yet flowery specimen is caused by the preparation process of Eagle's Nest Mine Gold specimens, where the Gold crystals have grown essentially as seams within the white Quartz matrix, and the crystals must be etched out to view them in their full potential. This results in a gorgeous display where the edges crystallize into little "fjords" where they grew between walls of Quartz, and the surfaces have a very fine texture which becomes highly reflective due to the metallic nature of Gold. This specimen has a natural patina on some areas of the specimen, which turn into a deep reddish-orange, with hints of blue and purple if you look very closely. As with native Copper, these richly colored patinas are very desirable when harmonious with the specimens, and the spots of iridescent red in contrast with the pure golden color make for a lovely contrast. This specimen is very finely wrought, but very hardy, as native elements are.
