Description
Twinned Ferberite, QuartzTazna Mine, Cerro Tazna, Nor Chichas Province, Potosí, Bolivia
8.9 x 4.8 x 4.4 cm (3.48 x 1.84 x 1.81 in)
All 9 centimeters of this excellent Ferberite specimen consists of a single twinned crystal, a remarkably large yet well-formed example for the species. This twinning plane is perfectly visible from the terminations (where they split off like a fish tail) down to the bottom where one half ends and the other half continues growing down. The color is alluringly dark, almost black, imparting a sci-fi look to the specimen. The luster varies slightly between faces, from a near mirror-finish to a brushed metal appearance, which is caused by almost microscopic striations that run perpendicular across the front of the crystal faces. This specimen is in nearly perfect condition; it is important to note that the edges at the forefront of the crystals are not damaged, but rather have very small bevels that are textured with horizontal striations all the way down the crystal. This is a remarkably geometric Ferberite, almost futuristic, and a textbook example of the best twinning you will get in Ferberite.
