Description

Framed Pyritized Fossil Crinoid
Pentacrinus fossilis
Lower Jurassic
Lyme Regis, England

This marvelous Pyritized Crinoid plaque exhibits extraordinary anatomical detail and superb preservation. Through the process of Pyrite mineral replacement, the ancient organic structures have been transformed into gleaming metallic forms, imparting an elegant, subtly glistening golden hue that enhances the specimen's scientific and aesthetic appeal. The genus Pentacrinus, commonly known as the "floating sea lily," represents one of the most graceful of pelagic marine invertebrates of the early Jurassic seas. During adulthood, such Crinoids attached themselves to drifting wood, extending their delicate, feathery arms to filter-feed on plankton suspended in the water column. Their unique morphology and mode of life render them among the most fascinating fossils of the period. This generously sized and finely preserved plaque, measuring 51 x 38 inches (130 x 97 cm), stands as a museum-quality specimen, distinguished by both its striking natural beauty and its scientific significance. The provenance, Lyme Regis, Dorset,England, is hallowed ground in the history of paleontology-celebrated as the birthplace of Earth Science. It was along these same Jurassic cliffs that Mary Anning, at only twelve years of age, made her groundbreaking discovery of the first complete Ichthyosaur skeleton, forever transforming our understanding of prehistoric life. An exquisite fusion of artistry and geology, this Pentacrinus plaque captures the timeless elegance of life immortalized in stone-an enduring testament to nature's own craftsmanship.
Overall Measurements: 51.50 x 38.25 x 2.00 inches (130.81 x 97.16 x 5.08 cm)
